I PHASE
This is the ground phase because it is aimed to the acquisition of the mathematic model and to the elaboration of a CAD 3D model of the tablets that will be studied. Once idenfied the tablets that have to be anlyzed, the main steps of the process are:
- Digital acquisition of the tablets by a laser scanner; the resulting “clouds of points” are re-assembled and mathematically elaborated.It is possible to see the 3D image of the tablet by CAD and VRML tecnologies
- Creation of a virtual model
- Creation of files with DB where other data (like index cards) are recorded
- Connection of the 3D virtual model to the other files (for istance, the DB files of DR Catalogue)
II PHASE
After the digital acquisition of a tablet it is possibile to carry on with further phases, according to the state of the tablets or to the aims and projects of study:
- If a tablet is in a bad state, it is possible to study it and project some restore
- If a tablet is fragmentary, it is possible, in particular, to elaborate virtual joins, before attempting real reconstruction
- In this way it is possible also carry on joins of fragments scattered through different Museums: it is possible, in fact, to work on 3D images of the fragments and to obtain a virtual reconstruction of the original tablet
- The scholar, who has to analyze the text, can use the digitalized image, that fully corresponds to the original, can be rotated, magnifyed, etc., without handling the tablet
- It is possible to draw photos by the digitalized images
- It is possible to use the images, digitalized and recorded, to create a web site of the Museum; there is also the possibility of creating informatic ways of acess to the archive (protected by passwords), that allow to study the text from another place (for example from the University, or from another town)
- If it is necessary to move the tablets (for an exhibition, and so on), it is possible to use the virtual model obtained through the process of Reverse Engineering for the project the most suitable packing
III PHASE
Thanks to this digitalized way of recording of the images of the tablets, it is possibile in a second time to prepare a real copy of the tablets. In fact thanks to the rapid prototyping it is possible reconstruct really the tablet starting from the 3D mathematic model through the Rapid Prototyping System. Therefore, if it is necessary, direct copies in innovative , plastic maaterial or negative copies for casts in traditional will be prepared
