ALTAN & AEC

The continuation of the ALTAN project is the AEC project ("Analisi Elettronica del Cuneiforme": Electronic Analysis of Cuneiform), which since 1987 has proceeded in collaboration with IBM SEMEA of Rome and Pisa.
With the collaboration of students from the University of Pisa, of the Department of Ancient History, Marinella Casini, Paolo Gentili, Angelo Ghiroldi, and Piero Giorgetti, the cataloguing of Assyrian and Nuzi texts have continued with the aid of personal computers and modified versions of IBM applications. The AEC project has the same fundamental objectives as the ALTAN project.
- The first stage of the project, essentially carried out by Angelo Ghiroldi with the database program Filing Assistant, consisted in electronic storing and editing of the textual information and allowed access to the various data independently from their order of insertion. Until 1990 the data were stored in four complementary files. The first contained the head file, thus all the information related to the analysed document and the text in transliteration. The second was designed to focus on personal names. The third was used for the graphic representation of genealogical data, while the fourth contained the bibliographical information.
- The second stage of the project, for which Paolo Gentili was responsible, has make possible, trough the program Lancelot, the identification of the specific transliterated signs inserted following the order of the Manuel d'Epigraphie Akkadienne of René Labat.
- The third stage of research, entrusted to Marinella Casini, consisted in creating a program for grammatical analysis of the Akkadian texts. This, applicable only to forms of regular verbs, read the text and, applying some fundamental principles of Akkadian grammar, separated out forms of regular verbs from all other textual elements. Subsequently the obtained data were transferred to ancillary programs which were able to analyse the regular verbs operating with distinctions based on verbal tense and form.
